Karen Kemmis, PT, DPT, MS, is a physical therapist and exercise physiologist at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. She works in the outpatient physical therapy department and at the Upstate Affiliate of the Joslin Diabetes Center and University Endocrinologists. She is also an adjunct professor in the doctorate of physical therapy program. She earned bachelor and doctorate degrees in physical therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University and a master's degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse University. She specializes in physical therapy and exercise prescription for those with osteoporosis, diabetes, painful orthopedic conditions, and balance dysfunction. She lectures on exercise prescription for the aging adult, is on the New York State Department of Health Osteoporosis Advisory Council, is a co-investigator for the New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program, and recently co-wrote a chapter on osteoporosis for public health. She is co-chairwoman for the American Physical Therapy Association Section on Geriatrics' Physical Therapist as Exercise Experts for Aging Adults Certification Program.
