Leslie Becker-Phelps, PhD, launched her counseling career at age 17, as a telephone helpline volunteer in her New Jersey hometown. She is now a well-respected psychologist who treats individuals and couples in her private practice in Basking Ridge, NJ. Becker-Phelps is on the medical staff at Somerset Medical Center, where she previously held the titles of chief of psychology and clinical director of women's psychological services. She also served on the hospital's outcomes committee, credentialing committee, performance improvement committee, women's membership planning committee, and women's and children's advisory board.
Becker-Phelps has presented around the country on a variety of mental health issues. Some venues include the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Stephen Ministry, Carrier Clinic, MetLife, and the University of California, San Diego. She has been invited to address physicians and other health care professionals on clinical depression, postpartum depression, menopause, and treatment of individuals with histories of physical and sexual abuse. She has also presented on these issues to the public, as well as on general topics, such as managing stress and making personal change. Becker-Phelps is dedicated to helping individuals understand themselves and what they need to do to become emotionally and psychologically healthy. To this end, she writes a blog, "The Art of Relationships" on WebMD, as well as a blog on the Psychology Today web site, "Making Change." She has written articles for The Star Ledger and other newspapers.
