Bio

Michael P. Bolognesi, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon, director of Duke Orthopaedics Adult Reconstructive Surgery, and assistant professor of surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. Bolognesi finished medical school at Duke and completed his residency there before moving on to a fellowship year of training on adult reconstruction at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City. After his training, Bolognesi returned to join the academic faculty at Duke. He and his partners deliver a high level of specialized care for patients requiring hip and knee replacement as well as those that have undergone the procedure and are having difficulty.

Bolognesi conducts a high volume of clinical research focused on studying the outcomes of these procedures as well as investigating the introduction of new technologies to advance this field of care. His published the research study “The Impact of Diabetes on Perioperative Patient Outcomes After Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty in the United States” in the Journal of Arthroplasty, which has helped to confirm the increased risk of complications that patients with diabetes may face when undergoing hip or knee replacement.

He has published numerous other peer-reviewed articles as well as chapters in textbooks. He has given numerous academic and invited presentations in the United States and abroad. He serves as the guest editor for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Supplement for the Journal of Arthroplasty. He is a member of and holds leadership positions in numerous local, regional, and national orthopaedic associations.
