Q.

I am a 36-year-old male. I have acne on the back of my head, and is sometimes very painful. Any idea what this can be?

It seems to come and go randomly but has been occurring for about three years now. I have tried different shampoos and our laundry detergent has not changed.

Look for shampoos and cleansers that contain salicylic acid. You can also look for washes with benzoyl peroxide. If that does not help control the issue, it’s time to see your dermatologist for further evaluation and treatment. They may prescribe an antibiotic by mouth, along with a prescription-strength shampoo to help clear the breakout faster and minimize the risk of scarring.
